HEALTH / NUTRITION

Each TOP Learning Center provides community connections to health services which assesses TOP children’s health and wellness. These services are available to families on-site during scheduled times each year and within the community year-round. Each child is assessed in sight and hearing, as well as overall general health. “Can Be Healthy Exams” and dental services are provided. Staff tracks vaccination records and assists parents to obtain all inoculations which will be necessary to protect their child’s health and to qualify for entry into Kindergarten. Children also learn positive health habits, dental hygiene, hand washing, and other life health processes.

Surveys indicate that children in poverty do not always get enough to eat and many times do not get a balanced diet. This affects their ability to concentrate and to learn at school. TOP maintains a fully equipped commercial kitchen where two hot meals and one snack are prepared daily for the children. Menus are planned by a licensed dietician to ensure that the food served daily satisfies the minimum daily nutritional requirements of the children. The children eat family style with their classmates and teachers in their classrooms. TOP students also learn to set their tables, serve their food, and clean up their dishes to encourage self sufficiency and taking responsibility.
